Michael Ball: classical cheer this Christmas

Hailing from Worcestershire, all-round performer Ball fell in love with theatre at an early age. He landed a role in The Pirates of Penzance in Manchester in the 1980s, then went on to perform in shows such as Les Miserables.

He made his name on TV too, performing at the broadcast of the Miss England competition then, after a period away from the limelight, made a storming return to form in the stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2002. The past few years have seen a resurgence in his profile, with a 2007 tour kicking off a stellar comeback period. His 2009 album Past and Present was arguably his greatest recorded work, although in 2014 he wowed critics with If Everyone Was Listening, which was lauded by the music press.
