Autumn Rugby Internationals: who'll stand tall after these mammoth clashes?
After completing a whitewash of Argentina, Australia, and Samoa last autumn, Eddie Jones' England then lost their Six Nations crown to Ireland in March, with the Irish recording only their third ever Grand Slam after their with a 24-15 victory against England in the final round of fixtures.
This time around, England will be hoping to put an indifferent 2018 behind them ahead of next year's Six Nations when they host South Africa, New Zealand, Japan and Australia at Twickenham in November. The matches are also seen as an important step in England’s preparations for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and Eddie Jones’ side will have to be at their best to see off four tough opponents.
Ireland, meanwhile, will take on Italy, Argentina, New Zealand and the USA in their set of autumn international fixtures. Joe Schmidt's side face world number one ranked New Zealand on 17 November in their standout fixture, having defeated the All Blacks for the first time in 111 years in 2016 by 40–29 in Chicago. A week later the USA play at the Aviva Stadium for the first time, but they have never beaten the Irish; having played them nine times since 1994.
Home nations meet in Autumn Rugby Internationals
Wales have perhaps the most challenging set of fixtures – taking on Scotland, Australia, Tonga and South Africa at the Principality Stadium. The clash with Gregor Townsend's Scots on 3 November sees two home nations go head-to-head, before the Welsh take on 2019 World Cup group opponents Australia. Big-hitting Tonga are next to visit Cardiff, before South Africa complete a challenging fixture list for Warren Gatland's men on 24 November.
The Welsh won two of their four autumn fixtures in 2017, beating South Africa (24-22) and Georgia (13-6) but lost out to Australia and New Zealand. After their clash with Wales, Scotland come up against Fiji, South Africa and Argentina at Murrayfield. The Scots beat The Pacific Islanders 44-38 on their first visit played in Scotland in seven years, narrowly lost to New Zealand 17-22, but then hammered Australia 53-24 in their final fixture last time out.
