Hosting royalty... musical royalty
The corner of Lime Street and London Road has actually been the location of two different Liverpool Empire Theatre buildings. The first opened as the New Prince of Wales Theatre and Opera House in 1866 and was Liverpool's largest theatre of its time. After numerous re-openings and changes in ownership (the theatre was sold for £30,000 in 1896, equivalent to £3,190,000 during 2016), what would eventually be called The Empire, was demolished in 1924. Just one year later, the Liverpool Empire Theatre of today replaced it on the same site. It was acquired by Merseyside Council in 1979 and has since undergone a whole host of refurbishments. Since its latest revival, the Liverpool Empire Theatre has seen performances from Black Sabbath, Kylie Minogue and Elton John. A local group called The Quarrymen first set foot on the Empire stage in 1957. Of course, they would later become known as The Beatles, who returned as the monumental foursome in 1962. The Liverpool Empire also held the distinguished Royal Command Performance twice during the 1970s, as well as equally celebrating the Royal Variety Show in 2007 to commemorate Liverpool as the city of culture throughout the whole of Europe for 2008. This venue is a Liverpool institution, full of musical and architectural history that encompasses the city as a whole. Take in this great space and enjoy the show, with Liverpool Empire Theatre tickets now available to buy and sell via StubHub.
Just don't enter the auditorium alone
Designated a grade two listed building by the National Heritage, the Liverpool Empire Theatre is the country's largest two-tier auditorium, with 2,350 seats. It was designed by architectural firm W. and T.R. Milburn, with a Neoclassical style façade and Louis XVI interior décor featuring many intriguing items inspired by the classical artists and sculptors of Rome. It should also be mentioned that at least two ghosts roam the halls and auditorium of this theatre! The first is Len, a former painter at the theatre, and the other an unknown Victorian girl of around nine or ten years old. Still sound like a good idea? Of course it does!
