Strength, agility and endurance
The highly popular sport of gymnastics derives from both traditional circus performance skills and the various exercises that ancient Greeks used to mount and dismount a horse. Designed to develop a whole host of important muscle groups and test endurance, strength, agility, balance, flexibility and coordination just to name a few, the sport is split into numerous different categories. The most popular is competitive artistic gymnastics, where men take on the pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar, women take on the uneven bars and balance beam and both parties take on the vault and floor exercise. Other disciplines recognised by the FIG (Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique) include aerobic, acrobatic and rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining, with the latter two also appearing alongside the competitive artistic form in the world's biggest sporting event. The emergence of Team GB
Alongside the Games, there are several other major events on the Gymnastics calendar to provide all the excitement, intensity and drama that you want from a sporting competition. Each field has its own World Championships held either annually or bi-annually, while many are also included in the Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games and Asian Games. There are also several other developing forms of the sport, including aesthetic group gymnastics, TeamGym, men's rhythmic gymnastics, wheel gymnastics and mallakhamb, which also stage their own championships during the year. The sport has produced numerous greats over the years, such as Mary Lou Retton, Olga Korbut and Nadia Comăneci, while more contemporary champions include Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas and Shawn Johnson. Team GB has also produced a whole host of medal winners in the modern era, including Beth Tweddle, Bryony Page and Amy Tinkler in the women's field and Louis Smith, Brinn Bevan, Kristian Thomas, Nile Wilson and Max Whitlock in the men's, with the latter the most successful gymnast the country has ever produced.
