On the U.S. gymnastics team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Nastia Luikin won the coveted all-around gold medal. She’s won a total of five Olympic gold medals and she can also count nine World Championship medals as part of her hardware. Her father Valeri Luikin, who coached her during her competitive years, won Olympic gold in gymnastics while competing for the Soviet Union. Her mother Anna Ketchneva took home the top prize in rhythmic gymnastics at the 1987 World Championships. Luikin cares very much about the future of female gymnasts and that’s why she’s so passionate about the competition bearing her name. It gives emerging stars their chance to be in the limelight. The contest is for junior gymnasts who are divided into junior and senior categories. Seniors are 16 years of age and older and juniors are 15 years of age and younger. Thirty six of the top female Junior Olympians. They earned their way into this competition on the basis of points they earned in invitational meets. Nearly 20 events, which are part of the Nastia Liukin Cup Series, led up to this event. They are held throughout the country in January and February. The gymnasts compete in balance beam, floor exercise, vault, uneven bars and all-around. The combined scores in these events determine who wins the all-around title.
