Its inaugural 2020 season also opened a brand-new $75 million venue known as New Wichita Ballpark after the City of Wichita razed the historic Lawrence-Dumont Stadium that previously occupied the same site. The Marlins AAA affiliate formerly played as the Baby Cakes in New Orleans. The Baby Cakes finished the 2019 season as the third-place finisher in the Pacific Coast League American Southern with a record of 73-65. Keith Johnson is the first manager of the newly formed Wind Surge. Johnson coached for seven seasons for the Salt Lake Bees and one season with the New Orleans Baby Cakes with a career record of 752 wins. What was the team’s record last season?The Miami Marlins AAA affiliate played their last season in New Orleans as the Baby Cakes in 2019. The club finished the season 73-65, including a 40-30 record on the road. This was the first time since 2012 that the franchise had a winning record and had the best overall record since 2001. The team finished third in the Pacific Coast League American Southern.
How did the top prospects perform for the Marlins’ AAA team last season?Outfielder Jesus Sanchez had a slugging percentage of .446 in 65 at bats in AAA for the Baby Cakes. Fellow outfielder Monte Harrison spent part of the 2019 on the injured list but hit .270 in 222 at bats with a .351 OBP and .441 SLG. He stole 23 bases with only two failed attempts. Right-handed pitcher Nick Neidert had a difficult year with a 4.67 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP in 54 innings, but the Marlins have faith that he will still be a top prospect.
