White Lies: doom-laden superstars

Despite appearing to enjoy immediate success after bursting onto the scene in 2009, Ealing-based three-piece White Lies actually endured a number of years of slog before hitting the top spot. Originally known as Fear of Flying, frontman Harry McVeigh and his bandmates Charles Cave and Jack Lawrence-Brown put out a number of small releases on indie labels and supported the likes of The Maccabees on tour. But it wasn't until 2007, when they switched their sound significantly to a more doom-laden, Joy Division-influenced oeuvre and changed their name to reflect their new maturity, that they earned a record deal after playing just one gig in their new guise.

The band made a big splash, appearing on an NME-sponsored tour of the UK and high profile slots at festivals such as T in the Park and Reading in 2008. By early 2009 the hype around the band was such that their debut album went straight to number one, driven by edgy singles "Death", "To Lose My Life" and "Farewell to the Fairground". Buoyed by the success, they hit the top five around Europe with 2011 follow-up Ritual, progressing to UK arenas for the tour to promote the album. With 2013's Big TV propelling the group to global superstar status, and the release of their fourth studio album, Friends, in 2016, demand for White Lies tickets has never been higher.
