The Maccabees biography

This band, consisting of Orlando Weeks, Hugo White, Felix White, Rupert Jarvis and Sam Doyle, came together in London and chose their name after flicking through a Bible and picking a random word. Their breakthrough came in 2006 with the release of second single 'Latchmere' by Fierce Panda Records after BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq gave the track significant airtime. Debut album Colour It In followed in 2007 and the band embarked on a tour that saw them sell out The Roundhouse in London. Track 'Toothpaste Kisses' also became a commercial success after it was used in a popular TV advertising campaign. Second album Wall of Arms received positive reviews upon its release and was championed on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show. The next few months saw the group appear at festivals all over the country and release single 'Can You Give It'. By 2011 they were already working on their third album, after headlining Leeds and Reading Festivals the previous summer. Given to the Wild was released in January 2012 and was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize. After touring the new LP, the band went back to the studio to work on the next record. Marks to Prove It came out in July 2015 to great acclaim, sparking what many assumed would be a resurgence of the London rockers. In August 2016, the band announced their intentions to split up, with a twitter and facebook statement saying "There have not been fallings out and we are grateful to say that we are leaving the group as a dividing force".
