The Flaming Lips: award-winning rockers still going strong
One of Q Magazine's 50 bands to see before you die, The Flaming Lips emerged in the early 1980s; spending the post-punk years touring and honing their sound before releasing debut album Hit to Death in the Future Head in 1993. The record struck gold, making way for a fascinating, ever-evolving musical trajectory from heady guitar anthems to smooth, psychedelic rock arrangements that has seen the band stand the test of time.
Earning a reputation for their highly-charged and unpredictable live performances, The Flaming Lips scaled the dizzying heights of rock and roll with their critically acclaimed ninth album The Soft Bulletin (1999). Voted NME's album of the year, the band followed up their success with chart smash hits such as the buoyant "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" and "Do You Realize??"; helping them secure mainstays at big-league festivals like Glastonbury and Burning Man.
2006 album At War with the Mystics crashed the UK Top 10, before the group won their their Grammy Award for "The Wizard Turns On..."; which won Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2007. 14th album Oczy Mlody received some of the best reviews of the group's career so far – proof that, with wild front man Wayne Coyne at the rudder, the band will show no signs of slowing down any time soon.
