From rollercoasters to rappers
The Dreamland Margate site opened as an amusement park in 1880 and over the next century became one of the most popular in South East England thanks to its array of traditional fairground attractions and hi-tech white-knuckle rides. After closing in the mid-'00s, the park received major relaunches in both 2015 and 2017, with the former including a rebuild of the Grade II-listed wooden rollercoaster, Scenic Railway, and the latter adding several brand new attractions including the Dreamland Drop, Pendulum and Dreamcatcher. Having previously been used as the site for music videos by Five Star and Marina & the Diamonds, Dreamland Margate then became a live music venue itself when it staged the inaugural Demon Dayz Festival in 2017. More than 15,000 people descended on the park to watch performances by the likes of De La Soul, Kelela and Gorillaz, the cartoon band whose second album was named after the festival. Demon Dayz and Sunset Sessions
Following the huge success of Demon Dayz, Dreamland Margate staged a surprise festival just a month later. Taking place across six different weekends, the Sunset Sessions featured performances from chart-topper Jess Glynne and Sam and the Womp, electro-swing duo The Correspondents and Manchester producer TCTS, DJ sets from punk rockers Slaves, Faithless' Sister Bliss and Radio 1's Danny Howard and a DJ battle between Blur drummer Dave Rowntree and The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess. A year later the Sunset Sessions returned with DJ sets from the likes of Sara Cox, Craig Charles, Norman Jay, Don Letts and Adrian Sherwood. The park has also welcomed a whole host of major names for solo shows including ex-Supergrass lead vocalist Gaz Coombes, electronic pioneers Orbital, space rock legends Hawkwind, reggae icon Lee 'Scratch' Perry, MC Big Narstie, indie outfit The Rifles, drum and bass DJ Ray Keith, tribute act Fleetmac Wood and folk-punks The Levellers, as well as DJ sets from Pete Tong and Groove Armada.
