A thoroughly modern music venue
Built during the height of Manchester's modernisation, the Bridgewater Hall was opened by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1996. Named after the third Duke of Bridgewater, the venue later received several architecture accolades for enhancing the city centre's appearance including the RIBA North West Award and the Civic Trust Special Award. It's perhaps best known for its £1.2 million pipe organ, which at the time of installation was the UK's largest instrument for more than 100 years. It also boasts several other unique features including the Ishinki Touchstone, an 18-ton marble sculpture by Kan Yasuda, a statue of revered British conductor and cellist Sir John Barbirolli and earthquake-proof isolation bearings which keeps out noise and vibrations from the nearby Metrolink. Located on Lower Mosley Street on a specially constructed part of the Rochdale Canal, the hall has a capacity of 2,341 and stages up to 250 events every year. Something for everyone
Part of the SMG theatres division which also includes Scunthorpe's Plowright Theatre, Whitley Bay Playhouse and York Barbican, The Bridgewater Hall has been the official home of the Halle Orchestra, Halle Choir and Manchester Boys Choir since its 1996 opening. The Halle Youth Orchestra and Youth Choir joined the fold in 2002, the BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata are also regular performers, while the venue also stages its own International Concert Series each year. However, there's far more to the Bridgewater Hall than classical music. Classic singer-songwriters such as Joan Baez, Don McLean and Elvis Costello, indie favourites Belle and Sebastian, Iron and Wine and Badly Drawn Boy and soul singers Beverley Knight, Gregory Porter and Rebecca Ferguson are just some of the eclectic range of acts who have graced its stunning auditorium over the past few years.
