The Rangers were first established as the Washington Senators in Washington D.C. in 1961. The city's first franchise, also called the Senators, moved its organisations to Minnesota the previous year under owner Clark Griffith. Here they would become the Minnesota Twins, allowing the new Senators to take its place in the capital. When they moved to Arlington to become the Texas Rangers in 1972, D.C. didn't see a glimpse of major league baseball for over 30 years, until the Montreal Expos relocated there and became the Washington Nationals. The Rangers got their first victory, a 5-1 win over the California Angels, on their second ever game and got their first winning season in 1974 after disappointing 1972 and 1973 finishes. Under manager Johnny Oates, the Rangers won their first division title in 1996, where big slugger Juan González was named as the American League's Most Valued Player. The team was bought by Tom Hicks, a billionaire investor, in 1998, three years before the most highly-paid deal in the history of baseball. Shortstop Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez was signed on a 10-year contract worth $252 million. Nowhere does it large quite like Texas!
