Baseball began in St. Louis, a major port city situated on the banks of the Mississippi in Missouri, with the formation of the Brown Stockings in 1875. They played in the National Association league for just one season before it was dismantled. The following year, the Brown Stockings entered the National League, founded that year, and earned a respectable third place in the standings. Even more respectable: the first ever no-hitter game in Major League Baseball history, recorded by George Bradley against the Hartford Dark Blues. Allegations of game-fixing meant the Brown Stockings were expelled after the 1877 season and the club went bust. Existing as a barnstorming club (travelling the country to play exhibition games) throughout the late 1870s and early 1880s, it was eventually bought by German entrepreneur Chris von der Ahe in 1882, who rearranged its workings to become one of the founding members of a new league to rival the National League: the American Association. This is considered the birth year of the major franchise that would later be known as the St. Louis Cardinals. Well over 100 years later, they're still knocking them out of the park. The Cardinals, as they were renamed in 1900, were especially advanced in the farm system. Pioneered by Branch Rickey, the farm system gives training and experience to young players, often in the minor leagues, and offers those successful a chance to earn their stripes in the big leagues. Ahead of his time, Rickey also signed Jackie Robinson, the first black player in Major League Baseball. Their first World Series win came in 1926 against the Yankees, despite New York legend Babe Ruth slugging a World Series record of three home runs in game four, a record only ever equalled four times. The Cardinals won another ten championships up to 2011 and have a whole load of MLB records to their name. A serious and long-standing rivalry with the Chicago Cubs still remains, so expect some lively tension if you manage to bag tickets to this one.
