Richard Hawley Biography - Sheffield Songwriter Bringing the Steel City to Life Through Music

Born in Sheffield, the singer began his career in music at an early age, forming band Treebound Story when he was still at school. The '90s saw him move on to alternative Britpop band Longpigs, seeing success with album The Sun is Often Out and singles 'She Said' and 'On and On'. After being approached by friend Jarvis Cocker in 2000, the musician briefly joined Pulp. Encouraged by the band, he began to focus on developing his solo work, leading to the release of Late Night Final in 2001, inspired by the cry of the vendors selling the Sheffield Star newspaper on the streets of the Steel City.

Great critical acclaim followed with second album Lowedges in 2003, with widespread praise from fellow artists like Coldplay and Radiohead. Again inspired by the city of his birth, the singer's next album Coles Corner became a musing on a location where courting lovers often met away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Nominated for the Mercury prize in 2006, even eventual winners the Arctic Monkeys were shocked that the album didn't win the top prize. Following albums Lady Bridge and Truelove's Gutter had similar success, with the latter winning the Mojo magazine record of the year in 2009. A further Mercury prize nomination came in 2012 with the artist's seventh album Standing at the Sky's Edge and after three years working on various collaborations with other artists, the singer is back to his best with new album Hollow Meadows, released in September 2015.
