Rice Owls Baseball TicketsFor the better part of two decades the Rice Owls were one of, if not the most, preeminent programs in college baseball. For the 1990s and most of the early 2000s, Rice was a staple in the postseason. A remarkable 23 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament saw the Owls make seven trips to the College World Series, including a 2003 Championship in Omaha. That 2003 season saw Rice put up an incredible 58-12 regular season record. It's easy to think about the "bigger" schools that take up much of the sports' landscape in Texas, but for two of the last three decades, it's hard to discuss NCAA baseball without recognizing the dominance of the Rice Owls. While the Owls aren't as dominant right now as they were during those two decades, they are fighting to reclaim their spot at the top of the college baseball world. Sluggers like Lance Berkman, Jose Cruz and Paul Janish were all parts of those wildly successful Owls teams. As of today, pitchers Tyler Duffy and Jon Duplainter as well as All-Star third baseman Anthony Rendon are the only Rice alumni on active rosters.
Do the Rice Owls have any rivals in baseball?Seeing collegiate sports teams have intense rivalries with intrastate schools is common. Rice's chief rival is even closer than that, though. Rice University officially opened in Houston, Texas, in 1912. Just 15 years later, the University of Houston also opened. Though Rice has been the more successful baseball program by a wide margin, the battle for supremacy between the Rice Owls and the crosstown Houston Cougars has characteristics of both schools for nearly 100 seasons.
