Who is the Purdue University women's head basketball coach? The 2019-20 season marks Sharon Versyp's 14th at the helm of Purdue University's women's basketball program. With 276 victories, she is the program's all-time leader in wins. Nine of her first 13 seasons have produced 20 wins or more. She owns the program record for Big Ten conference wins at 120 and counting. She ranks fifth in Big Ten victories all time and third among active coaches. Her teams have appeared in six Big Ten Tournament championship games, where they have won four times. Under Coach Versyp, the Boilermakers have specialized in defense. They have held opponents to fewer than 60 points per game in six seasons, including a program record 54.6 points per game in 2006-07.
Where does the Purdue women's basketball team play its home games?Since Dec. 2, 1967, Purdue University basketball teams have played at Mackey Arena on the Purdue campus. Mackey Arena opened with a matchup against legendary UCLA coach and Purdue alum John Wooden's UCLA Bruins. The Boilermakers lost 73-71 that day but launched a home-court advantage that has seen them win over 80% of their home games. The women's program has a 435-152 record in the building. Originally known as Purdue Arena, the facility was named after former Purdue athletics director Guy "Red" Mackey. The arena has seating space for 14,222. Mackey underwent a major renovation beginning in 2007. In addition to a new 13,300-square-foot facility for sports medicine, the renovation provided a 12,900-square-foot strength and conditioning area and new basketball practice facilities.
What is the Purdue University women's basketball team's biggest rivalry? As members of the Big Ten conference, the Purdue University women's basketball team plays strong rivals every year, including the Michigan State Spartans and the Maryland Lady Terps. However, among college sports rivalries, few can match the intensity of Purdue versus Indiana University. Each year since 1993-94, Purdue and the Indiana women's basketball team have played a rivalry game known as the Barn Burner. The winner takes home the Barn Burner Trophy. Purdue won the first Barn Burner during the 1994 season. The Boilermakers own an overall 18-8 record in Barn Burner games but have not won the trophy since 2016. Overall, the Boilermakers' record against Indiana is 55-32.
Are any former Purdue women's basketball players in the WNBA?Beginning with Corrisa Yasen in 1997, 15 Purdue University women's basketball players have gone on to play in the WNBA. Ukari Figgs and Katie Douglas have won WNBA championships with the Los Angeles Sparks and the Indiana Fever, respectively. Douglas has appeared in five WNBA All-Star games. With her heritage in Coach Versyp's defense, it is no surprise that Douglas ranks fifth all-time in the WNBA in steals.
