Also using the stage name of Poppy, That Poppy is an American singer and songwriter who was born in Boston. From her base in Los Angeles, That Poppy has been composing her ambient tracks, songs and other music since 2014. The musician is also a model and a dancer, in addition to her work creating songs. Shifting between electro-pop, ambient and dream pop with an almost effortless connection to all three sub-genres, That Poppy first rose to fame on YouTube as a personality portrayed by Moriah Rose Pereira, the artist's real name.
That Poppy's career milestones
Pereira was born in 1995 and as a child had ambitions to make it as a professional dancer. Focusing on her high precision dance moves as a youngster, she also took an interest in music, largely due to the fact that her father was a drummer in a band. At the age of 14, Pereira relocated to Nashville, the home of music in America, due to the working commitments of her dad. From this point in her life, Pereira became more focused on music than dance, and the character that would become That Poppy began to emerge.
Building up a following on social media, principally by sharing videos on YouTube, That Poppy started to gain attention from around 2012. The artist performed at a number of social media festivals at this time, including VidCon and DigiTour, among others. She formed a group for a time called Heyhihello, which recorded a few cover versions, such as “Little Talks”. A couple of collaborations followed before That Poppy decided to try and make a go of a professional solo career, relocating to the West Coast of America to do so.
Launching a YouTube channel called 'thatPoppyTV', That Poppy began making abstract videos with the renowned director Corey Michael Mixter. Seeing the popularity of the channel, Island Records decided to offer the video performer a recording deal, which she accepted. Her debut single for Island, “Everybody Wants to Be Poppy”, was released a few months afterwards, in 2015. With a career that was gathering momentum, That Poppy went on to play at the Corona Capital Festival later in the year.
In early 2016, That Poppy put out her debut EP. Entitled Bubblebath, it featured four tracks: “Lowlife”, “Money, “Altar” and “American Kids”. Three of the tracks were co-written with Simon Wilcox, known for his work with Enrique Iglesias, among others. In October of 2017, That Poppy released her first proper studio album under the moniker of Poppy. Called Poppy.Computer, it got to number 33 in the US Independent Album Charts.
