Pixies - Touring Europe in 2016

This Boston band made a name for themselves in the late '80s for their raw, alternative rock sound, and they return in 2016 with new material - their first since Indie Cindy in 2014. Headed by the enigmatic Black Francis, their sound merges punk with surf rock, animalistic screams with delicate harmonies and dreamy melodies with powerful bass lines. Fans have only had fleeting previews of the music they've been working on, with live performances of 'Um Chagga Lagga' and a taster video hinting at the exciting direction to come, but the band have set such high standards for themselves that there is little doubt the forthcoming new album will meet expectations. The seed for this group was planted when Charles Thompson and Joey Santiago met at the University of Massachussetts, and after the pair found bassist Kim Deal and David Lovering, they were fully formed. Thompson adopted the stage name Black Francis (and Frank Black for later solo releases), and the band set to work creating the 17-track demo The Purple Tape.

After signing with independent label 4AD, the band unveiled a mini LP called Come On Pilgrim, which was followed by debut album Surfer Rosa. The critical acclaim met by their first full length prompted further experimentation with sophomore album Doolittle, and their unique style proved a massive influence for their contemporaries. Their impact is clear - grunge legends Nirvana and alt heroes Radiohead both cite them as major influences.

However, after the release of Bossanova and Trompe le Monde in 1990 and 1991 respectively, touring and songwriting tensions took their toll. The band split, with all members forging ahead with their own successful musical projects, but still reformed triumphantly a decade later to headline festivals and play concerts all over the world. 2013 saw Deal depart once again to focus on The Breeders, her band with her twin sister Kelley, and she was replaced on tour by Paz Lenchantin of A Perfect Circle (although Thompson and Santiago say the door is open for Deal to return at any point). The group's surreal style, offbeat lyrics and rebellion against convention prove a hit with a new generation of fans every time they step on stage.
