The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) was founded in 1948, and it is the eighth oldest Division I NCAA football conference. The conference is comprised primarily of teams located in the mid-South, which is the southern Midwest and the northern South. The first playoffs occurred in 1978. Eastern Kentucky is often considered the center of the conference since it is one of the original members of the conference and leads it in championships by far. It has also made five FCS National Championship appearances with two wins. The conference has undergone restructuring a few times, and it semi-regularly changes the members by one or two. The OVC is one of only two conferences since 1986 that has had a historically black college or university (HBCU) as a conference member that is not the MEAC or SWAC conference.
