Obsession London Tickets
The raw and timeless Obsession tells the story of down-at-heel Gino, a charismatic and handsome drifter who meets a married woman and begins a devouring, overwhelming love affair that ultimately leads them both down the path of betrayal and murder. But in this brooding tale of passion, the crime only serves to tear them apart.
Obsession is directed by Ivo van Hove, a multi-award winning Belgian renowned for his experimental off-Broadway productions. The piece brings together a stellar cast of British and Dutch actors, including members of van Hove's theatre company, Toneelgroep Amsterdam, which this year has taken up residency at the Barbican Centre. Obsession tickets are now available for the production's month-long London run.
Obsession started life as the classy 1943 romance-noir of the same name directed by Luchino Visconti, a film that was itself inspired by James M. Cain's classic thriller, The Postman Always Rings Twice. The stage play is director van Hove's fourth Visconti production.
Ivo van Hove won the 2015 Best Director Olivier Award for his production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge and the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Best Director. A View from the Bridge was also nominated in the Best Director category at the Drama Desk Awards and the Outer Critics Circle Award, and won the Tony Award for both Best Director and Best Revival.
Young and rootless drifter Gino fetches up at a small roadside diner run by sultry Hanna, who is bored by her marriage to the controlling, boorish Joseph, an older man whom she married for money. Gino's arrival is like a breath of fresh air; the attraction is immediate and he and Hanna soon begin an intense, passionate affair.
To escape her dreary existence, Hanna convinces Gino to run away with her. But the plan frustratingly fails, leading Gino and Hanna to take advantage of a chilling opportunity - strangling Joseph after a car crash.
Torn between his desire for Hanna and the desire to live as he pleases, drifter Gino starts to suspect that Hanna has manipulated him. In a moment of realisation, it becomes clear to Gino that while Hanna's life has been freed by their romance, his own has begun to resemble the life of another man. The couple have already started to drift apart by the time the police close in on them, leading the lovers-turned-killers towards their inexorable end.
