Following stints in minor Cleveland bands during the late '80s, singer and multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor birthed the NIN project after being given free use of the studio where he was working as an assistant engineer. The band's debut album Pretty Hate Machine was released in 1989, going platinum and becoming a sleeper hit. Its follow-up The Downward Spiral became NIN's mainstream breakthrough, hitting the Top 10 in the UK and US and featuring 'Hurt', which would later be famously covered by Johnny Cash. Topping the charts with their next two album releases, 1999's The Fragile and 2005's With Teeth, Reznor has continually evolved the band's sound, leading the genre's charge into exciting new territory as well as working on film projects in Hollywood. He shocked fans in 2009, however, announcing that the band was set to gear down, even going so far as to sell off his instruments on eBay. It was a more welcome surprise when he announced the band's return in 2012, coming back with the single Came Back Haunted before a triumphant Reading and Leeds Festivals headline slot.
