One of two major baseball teams in New York City, along with the New York Mets, the Yankees officially began in 1901, playing in the American League East Division as the Baltimore Orioles (not to be confused with the Baltimore Orioles of today). In 1903, baseball executive Frank Ferrell purchased the franchise with New York City's first Chief of Police, William "Big Bill" Devery, for $18,000 and moved operations to New York, where the club was renamed the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders were given their name due to their home ballpark on Hilltop Park, one of the highest points in Upper Manhattan. They came close to winning the league in their first year under this name (1904), but lost the deciding game to the Boston Americans, now known as the Boston Red Sox. The Highlanders later moved into a newly built stadium, far away from their highland home, and the name began to lose its touch. The media had already begun to use the Yankee nickname, and in 1913, it was officially adopted as the team name.
