Wichita Wind Surge TicketsWhile the 2020 season will be the first season of the Wichita Wind Surge's existence, the history of this brand-new franchise goes back to Denver, Colo., in 1984. Originally an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, the Denver Zephyrs played at Mile High Stadium. The team would pass through three different parent organizations, make four playoff appearances and win one American Association championship before Denver was awarded the expansion of the Colorado Rockies, pushing the Zephyrs out of town. This relocation took the Zephyrs to New Orleans to start the 1993 season. The Zephyrs were part of multiple organizations before the Miami Marlins took over the franchise in 2009. The Marlins rebranded the team as the New Orleans Baby Cakes before the 2017 season and announced the team would be moving once again for the 2020 season as the Wichita Wind Surge. Who is the manager for the Wichita Wind Surge? With the announcement that he would be the Wichita Wind Surge manager for 2020, Keith Johnson cemented his spot in the record book as the first-ever manager for the Wind Surge and as the last manager in the history of the New Orleans Baby Cakes. Before launching his managerial career, the 1992 Los Angeles Dodgers draft pick played professional baseball for 12 seasons, including a 2000 season where he made it to the Major Leagues with the Anaheim Angels. After his playing career, Coach Johnson got his first managerial position in 2008 in the Angels organization. He managed Single-A ball for three seasons before working his way up to Triple-A. While manager of the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees, Johnson was named Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year in 2013. He amassed a win-loss record of 468-504 in Salt Lake before taking the New Orleans Job for the 2019 season. In his first year in the Marlins' organization, Coach Johnson posted a record of 73-65. Across all levels, Johnson enters the 2020 season with 752 career victories.
Are there any former Wichita Wind Surge players on Major League Baseball rosters?Since 2020 will be the inaugural season for the Wichita Wind Surge no players have technically gone from Wichita to the Majors yet, but a look at the franchise's previous stop in New Orleans shows that several players have played for the organization before going to the Big Leagues. National League MVP Christian Yelich was a member of the team, as were pitchers Andrew Heaney and Jose Fernandez.
Does the Wichita Wind Surge have any rivalry games this season? Before the 2020 season, the New Orleans Baby Cakes had established a rivalry with the Memphis Redbirds. The two teams play in different divisions in the Pacific Coast League, so that rivalry was essentially rooted in their geographical proximity to one another. This season could see the birth of new rivalries with teams that are closer to Wichita, such as the Omaha Storm Chasers or the nearby divisional opponent, the Oklahoma City Dodgers.
Has the Wichita Wind Surge's stadium opened yet?The official stadium has not been opened yet for the Wichita Wind Surge, so details about it are sparse. As of now, it is known that the new $75 million stadium is being built on the former site of Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.
