My Bloody Valentine Biography - Perfectionist Performers

Formed in Dublin in 1983 around enigmatic guitarist and singer Kevin Shields, the group earned their big break after being spotted by Creation Records mogul Alan McGee. Impressed by their unique style, he signed the band and released their August 1988 EP You Made Me Realise - their first material to be warmly received by critics. Their debut album Isn't Anything followed in November of the same year, hitting Number One on the UK indie charts.

It would take another three years for the four-piece to release their next studio album, Loveless, in 1991. However, it was more than worth the wait, flooring fans and critics with its innovative, heavily layered guitars, overlapped by hauntingly sonorous vocals. More than 20 years on, it is still regarded as one of the most important and influential rock records of the modern era - and proved very difficult to top by the perfectionist band. They would spend the next 16 years recording, then scrapping, reams of material, with press reports suggesting upwards of 60 songs of varying stages of finality had been delivered to their label. Returning to the live circuit in 2007 for a run of celebrated gigs and festival appearances reinvigorated the quartet, however, and by the close of 2012 a third album appeared more tantalisingly close than ever.
