Starting out as a cult proposition in the 2000s, American post rock act Modest Mouse were an immediate standout success. Modest Mouse: grunge nuances with pop sensibility
Although they're most famous for rising to acclaim in the 2000s, platinum-selling Washington based band Modest Mouse have their roots in the early 1990s as the brainchild of lead singer Isaac Brock. Using the band as a vessel for his unique songwriting style, Brock began crafting a series of multi-layered chorales using wordplay, metaphors, philosophical musings and common sayings and phrases. After catching the attention of influential label Sub Pop, they put out the single "Broke" before eventually moving to Up Records.
Their debut album This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About made an impact on the American alternative scene in 1996, but the band made their major critical dent with the 1997 follow-up The Lonesome Crowded West. The record went on to become one of the defining indie records of the decade but their fourth and fifth albums attracted the most reverence among discerning music fans. The Moon & Antarctica launched them into the mainstream and Good News For People Who Love Bad News cemented their status as one of the best loved indie acts in the world in 2004.
The latter album spawned the Grammy-nominated smash single "Float On" which is counted among the best songs of the decade. The band's ever-evolving line-up grew to accommodate former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr in 2006, with whom they recorded fifth album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank during a three-year stint. As perennial festival favourites on both sides of the Atlantic, the group's emotionally-charged brand of indie-rock remains an essential among discerning music fans.
