Maximo Park: dance floor Geordie hitmakers

In the early 2000s, five Newcastle friends Paul Smith, Duncan Lloyd, Archie Tiku, Tom English and Lukas Wooller decided to try their luck at making it in music, after realising their shared passion for post punk and new wave artists such as The Jam, The Smiths and XTC. Crafting a sound that can best be described as avant-garde rock, the instrumental group took their moniker after a Miami meeting place for Cuban communists.

Alongside bands such as The Futureheads and The Libertines, Maximo Park crafted catchy, danceable indie rock songs that dominated the charts in the middle of the decade. Their 2005 album A Certain Trigger sold over 300,000 copies and was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, buoyed by the hit "Apply Some Pressure". Preceded by the hit single "Our Velocity", they followed up with 2007's critically acclaimed Our Earthly Pleasures (another UK certified gold record) before 2009's Quicken The Heart. 

Further albums The National Health (2012) and Too Much Information (2014) ensured Maximo Park were never long out of mind, with sixth album Risk to Exist - along with the album's lead single of the same name, which was first aired on Steve Lamacq's BBC 6 Music show - being released in 2017.
