Jackie Robinson, the Brooklyn Dodgers and immortality
The story of iconic manager Branch Rickey, legendary player Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers has become part of the fabled history of baseball, and the breaking of the colour barrier in the nation's favourite sport changed both the sport and America forever. Prior to that, the team founded as the Brooklyn Atlantics in 1883 joined the National League in 1890, capturing the pennant in its first season and adding another five through 1941, when America joined the war. After serving in the U.S. Army, Jackie Robinson was persuaded to join the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 as the team's first Black player. He made an immediate impact first as the Rookie of the Year and later when he and fellow teammate Roy Campanella anchored Dodger teams that captured 6 pennants in 10 years, from 1947-1956. In 1955, the Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates to win the pennant and faced interstate nemesis New York Yankees in a legendary contest that saw the Dodgers capture their first World Series. A new era begins: Los Angeles Dodgers
Two years after the improbable win in the 1955 World Series, the Brooklyn Dodgers franchise was relocated to Los Angeles California in a move that is controversial among baseball purists to this day. Brooklyn residents grieved the loss of economic and social benefits of a championship team and its famous Ebbets Field stadium and when the Brooklyn Giants followed in 1958 to become the San Francisco Giants, it simply added insult to injury. The Los Angeles Dodgers added two more World Series titles in 1963 and 1965, seeing players like pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale became household names and boyhood idols. Two additional titles in 1981 and 1988 bookended the decade of the 1980s and cemented the legacy of this legendary franchise with six World Series trophies, 23 pennants and 17 division titles. The Los Angeles Dodgers count San Francisco Giants as one of their main rivals, however, they have also met the New York Yankees in no less than 11 World Series contests through 1981, creating a true rivalry for the ages.
