The long and varied entertainment legacy of Leeds Varieties Music Hall
The Leeds Varieties Music Hall is a venerable UK entertainment institution, if ever there was one. It has presented what amounts to a living history of British entertainment, such is the wide range of truly legendary artists who have graced its stage. So when modern-day comedians like Jack Dee or Kojo Anim entertain audiences here, they're performing in the same concert hall as did Charlie Chaplin and Houdini. This is the kind of heritage you can tap into when you buy or sell Leeds Varieties Music Hall tickets on StubHub.
From Good Old Days music hall nights to John Lydon's spoken word
Leeds Varieties Music Hall was built way back in 1865 and, quite amazingly, the original decor is predominantly still intact. This makes it one of the few surviving Victorian era music halls, along with London's Hoxton Hall and Wilton's Music Hall. It achieved national fame in the 30 years during which the BBC's old-time music hall show, Good Old Days, was broadcast from there. While the TV production ended in the early 1980s, the hall has continued to hold Good Old Days music hall nights ever since. It has also always been a venue for stand-up comedians, theatre productions and music concerts. One of the best things about visiting the theatre is gazing at the many dozens of black and white photographs that adorn the walls commemorating some of the famous performers who have appeared here. Year after year, the venue's bill has included an extensive variety of entertainers, from the endlessly outspoken and colourful former Sex Pistols frontman, John Lydon in spoken word shows, to gentle evenings of traditional-style Irish folk ballads courtesy of fan favourites, The Fureys. An entertainment venue that's seen it all
In over 150 years of existence, Leeds Varieties Music Hall has seen it all, from vaudeville to pantomime, ballroom dancing to relatively chaste strip shows in the 1950s. In terms of iconic star power, it's seen it all too - from Prince Edward's mistress Lillie Langtrey to Buster Keaton, Morecambe and Wise and Eartha Kitt. It has also become a well-known music venue, with rock musicals rubbing shoulders with actual indie and rock bands. The live music selection in the modern era has usually been wide, and in any given week, the acts have ranged across the full spectrum, including a tribute to Showaddywaddy, The History of Rock musical and the hard edged AOR of Bang Bang Romeo. It all adds up to a superb music venue, well worth getting Leeds Varieties Music Hall tickets on StubHub.
