Kansas City Royals demonstrate focused, persistent success
The road to the first title for the Kansas City Royals began with their first game in 1969 against the Minnesota Twins, a rousing extra innings affair that saw the Royals capture their maiden victory by the score of 2-1. By 1980, it was the dominant team in its Western Division, winning consecutive titles from 1976-1978 ahead of teams such as the Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Angels. In fact, the team made the playoffs seven times in the decade from 1976 and advanced to its first World Series in 1985, matched against interstate arch-rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals. The 1985 baseball World Series was played under the lights, adding a historic touch to the proceedings, and it was also the first time that a team had erased a 3-1 deficit to win the championship. Powered by ace pitcher Bret Saberhagen and the bat of George Brett, the Kansas City Royals upset the favoured Cardinals in one of the most memorable finales in recent times. Famine, resurgence and renewed World Series glory
The remaining years of the 20th century were bleak for this proud franchise and following the death of its long-time owner in 1993, the championship team was systematically dismantled and sold off to stem financial difficulties. The Royals did not enjoy another winning season until 2003 under manager Tony Pena, who went on to be named Manager of the Year. Despite this, the team experienced consecutive disappointing seasons for the remainder of the decade, until a winning record in 2013 was used as a springboard for greater aspirations. The phenomenal campaign in 2014 featured another historic run thanks to a wild card win and eight straight victories over the Los Angeles Angels in the American League Division Series (ALDS) and the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), establishing a post season record, only to lose the World Series to the San Francisco Giants in seven games. One year later, Kansas City Royals would stand alone at the top of the baseball world… once again. Kansas City Royals tickets are ready now to buy or sell via StubHub.
