Kaiser Chiefs: over a decade at the top
After years toiling under their former moniker Parva, a change of style and name brought about a surge in popularity for Yorkshire boys the Kaiser Chiefs, with their thrilling and energetic style of pop-rock immediately resonating with indie fans across the UK. Securing a place in the NME Awards tour back in 2005, first LP Employment was an instant chart hit, earning a Mercury prize nomination as well as the Ivor Novello gong for Best Album in 2006. Everyone knows the words to the array of catchy hits on the record, from debut single "Oh My God" to "Everyday I Love You Less and Less". Singer Ricky Wilson even received praise for his unique style, winning Best Dressed prize at the 2006 NME Awards.
In a clear bid to innovate and evolve from their debut, the group's sophomore effort Yours Truly, Angry Mob took inspiration from Led Zeppelin and heavy rock outfits in the US, with lead single "Ruby" becoming their first UK number one. Third album Off With Their Heads spawned yet another hit single in "Never Miss a Beat", but the band announced a two-year break after its release in 2009. They returned as scheduled with yet another first: fans were invited to create their own version of the band's fourth LP by choosing 10 songs from a selection of 20 available. Later released officially as The Future is Medieval, the record restored the band to their rightful place in the UK charts.
After a performance at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, drummer and songwriter Nick Hodgson amicably departed the group to pursue solo projects, while frontman Wilson found a place as a judge on BBC talent show The Voice. After another success with the release of Education, Education, Education & War in 2014, the band returned Stay Together in late 2016 with the album mainly focussing on love and relationships..
