Japan Series titles
Despite the number of years the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters have been around, they have not won many Japan Series titles but the last decade has been more promising for the talented team. In 1962, after finishing as champions in the Pacific League, the Toei Flyers faced off against the Hanshin Tigers, the Central League champions, to win the 1962 Japan Series. 54 years later, the Fighters came out on top of the league and defeated the Chunichi Dragons in five games, only losing the first one. 2015-2016 was another successful season for the Nippon-Ham Fighters and they won the 2016 Japan Series in six games against the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. You never know what to expect with this team, but things certainly have been looking up for them in recent years. Nippon-Ham Fighters history
Since its existence in 1946, the Fighters have had many streaks of bad luck including very low rankings and many managerial changes. As if the lack of consistency weren’t bad enough, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters had to live under the spotlight of the successful Yomiuri Giants as they shared the same home stadium until 2004. With management changes over the years, the Nippon-Ham Fighters suffered with official name changes more than eight times. Starting with the Senators in 1946, Tokyu Flyers in 1947, Kyuei Fliyers in 1948 and back to the Tokyu Flyers from 1949 the team seemed to have finally settled on a team and management. But in 1954, Toei Company became the new managers and thus changing the name yet again to the Toei Flyers which stayed as their official name for nineteen years. In 1973 there was a one year name change to Nittaka Home Flyers, and the following year Nippon-Ham, a meatpacking company, took over management and changed the club’s name to the Nippon-Ham Fighters. In 2004, the team made the decision to move to the island of Hokkaido where they now reside with the Sapporo Dome as their home field.
Japanese cheerleading squads
It may not be common the western world to see cheerleaders at a baseball game, but the Japanese and Korean Baseball Leagues have cheerleaders for almost all major teams. The Japanese cheerleading squads prepare intricate choreographies for their fans to enjoy and add to the fun atmosphere at each and every game.
