Glasgow Royal Concert Hall: the city's cultural heart
A modernist building, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall was designed by Edinburgh architects RMJM with the celebrated Sir Leslie Martin, who was also responsible for London's Royal Festival Hall. Opened in 1990, the first performance was given by the Royal Scottish Orchestra - the first of many such concerts held in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, which has now become the permanent base of Scotland's premier orchestra. They can often be found performing or recording in their dedicated 600-seat auditorium or on the stage of the Main Auditorium, which, with 2,475 seats, has the largest capacity of Glasgow Royal Concert Hall's numerous venues. Renowned for its strong connections to classical music, plenty of other world-class orchestras such as Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra or the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra have played here, but almost every genre of music has at some point found its way onto the stage. From Johnny Cash to Van Morrison, Bob Hope to Nelson Mandela, stars of the musical and speaking worlds have seen culture lovers scrambling for tickets to Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Even the annual World Irish Dancing Championships are held here - whatever you're after, they've almost certainly got it.
