Gipsy Kings Biography - Flamenco Fun
Flamenco music flows through the blood of this legendary group, who were born in France but have strong Spanish ancestral roots. A true family affair, the band is built around brothers Nicholas and Andre Reyes and their cousins Maurice, Tonino and Jacques "Paco" Baliardo, who've stuck together throughout the group's 30-year history. Cutting their teeth playing at festivals, family events and even the streets of southern France in the late '70s, they were soon providing entertainment at high class parties in San Tropez, opting for a moniker that embodied their nomadic existence. The group became instantly recognisable for their unusual playing style, which involves three left-handed guitarists playing instruments strung for right-handers upside down.
Although popular around the world, their career really took off when their self-titled debut was released in the US in 1988. Spending almost a year on the charts, they were quickly snapped up for a Disney video and later appeared in hit movie The Big Lebowski and TV series Entourage with their feted cover of The Eagles' 'Hotel California'.
