Garbage: chart-topping veterans return for 20th anniversary UK shows

Despite their penchant for angst-filled lyrics, Garbage were an unexpected smash hit on commercial airwaves in the '90s. Their slick electronic sound and the distinctive deadpan vocals of flame-haired lead singer Shirley Manson helped the Scottish-American band garner a legion of fans and stack up over 17 million album sales worldwide.

Propelled by a string of successful singles – including "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains" – the band's self-titled, critically-acclaimed debut album sold over four million copies and achieved double platinum status in the UK. Follow-up Version 2.0 (1998) was equally successful – topping the UK Albums Chart and being nominated for two Grammy Awards. And the band have decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their second record with a UK tour in September; calling at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, London and Newcastle.

Garbage: grunge meets slick electro pop

Honing their sonic output in the early 1990s, Garbage blended a sound that can best be described as equal parts grunge and electro pop, borrowing darker hues from late '80s bands like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. Garbage have also been known to describe their sound as "sci-fi pop" off the back of their futuristic approach, with lyrical elements inspired by a tapestry of influences from Roxy Music to Patti Smith and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Tracks such as "Queer" and "Stupid Girl" helped the band acquire a cult global fan base in 1995-96, and propelled debut album Garbage to the top 20 in six countries. Version 2.0 went one better – charting in the top 20 in 12 countries, before the band were invited to record the theme song to the James Bond blockbuster The World Is Not Enough in 1998.

After a brief break-up and later hiatus, the band released third album Beautiful Garbage in 2003 and fourth effort Bleed Like Me in 2005, while 2012's Not Your Kind of People introduced the band's signature sound to a whole new generation, ensuring tickets for their UK concerts will be in huge demand from fans both old and new.
