Duran Duran Biography - New Wave Icons

Forming in 1978, this Birmingham band named themselves after a character in the French-Italian science fiction movieBarbarella. It was only upon Simon Le Bon joining as lead singer in 1980 that they settled on their classic line-up, and his vocals over the keyboard riffs of Nick Rhodes helped establish a trademark sound. With able backing from bassist John Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor on drums (incredibly, none of whom are related), the group soon gained a following both in the UK and across the Atlantic in America thanks to their knack for a catchy hook and synth scattered pop.

Beginning with 1981 single 'Planet Earth', the band enjoyed a series of successful hits on both sides of the pond, including 'Girls on Film', 'Hungry Like the Wolf', 'Rio' and 'Ordinary World'. Having sold over 100 million records throughout a fantastic career, they are among the most influential artists in British pop music, and continue to delight their fans with their performances today.
