The Professional Darts Corporation sponsors the World Grand Prix, serving as a world championship darts event. Players from throughout the world make their way to Dublin each fall to compete in this double in/double out format tournament. Darts is a deeply exciting event that is made even better by this tournament's unique format.
History of the Event
The World Grand Prix held its first competition in 1998, and throughout the years the format has changed slightly. With the use of various legs and multiple elimination formats in the first few years, in 2000 the tournament settled into a single elimination tournament format, which it has maintained ever since. This is also the only televised dart tournament in the world to require a double in/double out on the board. This means that a player cannot begin scoring unless they hit a double on the board, and they can't hit their final score unless it is a double. The sponsorship of the tournament has also changed hands throughout the years, with PartyPoker taking over as the title sponsor in 2011. The event has been hosted at the CityWest Hotel in Dublin since 2001, having previously been hosted by the Crosbie Cedars Hotel in Rosslare and the Casino Rooms in Kent. While most of the champions have been English, Michael van Gerwin, a player who hails from the Netherlands, has also won the championship on two different occasions.
Phil Taylor has dominated the field over the course of this tournament, having won the title eleven times. Among those victories, Taylor won four out of the first five championships and seven out of the first ten. Despite eleven championship wins, however, he's not unbeatable. Taylor has been knocked out of the tournament in the first round of play three times. The prise pool has also grown steadily over the years, starting at £38,000 in the initial year of the tournament, to almost £400,000 in the most recent years, delivering a first prise of £100,000 to the champion.
Taking place in the arena at the CityWest Hotel in Dublin, the World Grand Prix offers all of the excitement of any other world-class sporting event. Fans surround the dart players on all sides, as they throw down in the centre of the arena. They take great care to fill the arena from the centre on up, only opening the balcony after all floor seats are sold, ensuring that the crowd is close enough to truly feel the tension and excitement of the competition. The unique format of this tournament--double in/double out--ensures that the drama is never truly over as the players compete. One player may have an extensive lead, but while they are trying to double out the excitement only builds as their competitor works hard to catch up.
