CHVRCHES: much-praised Scottish trio
After following up their 2013 debut LP The Bones of What You Believe with sophomore effort Every Open Eye in 2015, Scottish trio CHVRCHES had critics again rushed to applaud their stylish mastery of accessible indie pop with 2018 effort Love Is Dead (UK number seven). Frontwoman Lauren Mayberry's distinctive vocals soar over synth-heavy electro beats, with standout tracks such as "Get Out", "My Enemy" and "Never Say Die" proving the group's talents as songwriters as well as musicians. 2019 sees the band head out on a brand new UK and Ireland tour, with dates up and down the country (and both sides of the Irish Sea) throughout February. CHVRCHES: new album and 2019 UK tour
Following the disbandment of his previous groups The Unwinding Hours and Aerogramme, Iain Cook enlisted former Boyfriend/Girlfriend singer Lauren Mayberry to provide vocals to a new project he was working on with university friend Martin Doherty. In a basement studio in Glasgow they recorded tracks for seven months before premiering single "The Mother We Share" in late 2012. They caught the attention of major music publishers, with the Guardian featuring them as a band of the day and the BBC including them on their Sound of 2013 list. Inspired by the likes of Depeche Mode, New Order and even a little bit of Kate Bush, the trio's lively and innovative sound led to a signing with Glassnote Records, who released their Recover EP in February 2013.
Debut album The Bones of What You Believe came out later in the year and was universally lauded as an incredibly strong first attempt, full of immediacy and emotional directness. After completing tours across the UK and Europe, the band returned to the studio to start work on a follow-up. Every Open Eye hit the shelves in July 2015 and proved the group's mastery of catchy synth-fused electro once again, blending genres together seamlessly to create music that appeals to a wide audience. After gruelling 2016 tour, the group returned to the studio and released third album Love Is Dead in May 2018. Buy CHVRCHES tickets at StubHub today and catch them live in concert.
