Blossoms: new boys on the block take charts by storm
Bursting into public consciousness after being discovered online by Coral vocalist James Skelly, psychedelic fivesome Blossoms are one of this year's must watch acts. With backing from big names like Skelly and having already supported James on tour, the future is certainly bright for the Stockport quintet, particularly after the success of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which was a UK chart topper and one of the twelve albums nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2017.
Showing no sign of slowing down, the group released second record Cool Like You (number four on the UK Albums Chart; number one on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart) in 2018, and continue to make a name for themselves at some of the UK's biggest festivals. Blossoms: unstoppable rise of Stockport quintet
Playing in separate outfits before joining forces to become what the band describe as a Stockport supergroup, Tom Ogden, Charlie Salt, Josh Dewhurst, Joe Donovan and Myles Kellock make up hotly tipped northern act Blossoms. Clearly influenced by some of the great Mancunian bands of their childhood, the five-piece outfit have great ambitions to match the success of the city's best loved luminaries, updating it for the modern day.
The keyboard work of Kellock intermingled with Dewhurst's twanging guitar gives the group its trademark psychedelic sound, while Ogden has a vocal delivery that instantly brings the Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner to mind - albeit with a Lancashire twang rather than the Sheffield band frontman's Yorkshire accent. It's easy to see them making it big thanks to a catalogue of effortlessly catchy tunes, from the synth riffs of "Charlemagne" and "At Most A Kiss" to the dreamy musings of 'Blown Rose', and their breezy pop appears tailor-made for a wider audience. The group were on the BBC's Sound Of new music list for 2016 (finishing fourth) before topping the UK charts only months later.
