Bloc Party: latest album showcases new direction

Formed at Reading Festival in 1999, London-based quartet Bloc Party burst onto the British music scene during the mid-2000s indie rock boom, when the likes of The Libertines, Maximo Park and Arctic Monkeys were storming the charts. Boasting a beguiling brand of art rock, the band's punk infused percussive tracks quickly helped them gather a cult following, with their Gang of Four-inspired music soon being trumpeted by Franz Ferdinand and Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq. Aided by the hype, Bloc Party's platinum-selling debut album Silent Alarm hit number three in the album charts, with tracks such as "Helicopter" and "Banquet" earning them a place as one of Britain's most talked about new bands and an NME Album of the Year Award.

Their darker, more complex 2007 sophomore record A Weekend in the City helped the band crack the US market, with follow-up efforts Intimacy and Four hitting the shelves in 2008 and 2012. By this point, Bloc Party were considered among the rock scene's most important players, with the ambiguous and intelligent nature of their lyrics helped to separate them from the rest of the crowd.

Following a challenging period of readjustment, Bloc Party returned with a new line-up and fresh focus in 2015. Fifth album Hymns, released in January 2016, was crammed with eclectic and surprisingly spiritual new tracks, such as lead single "The Love Within" and album tracks such as "Exes", "Eden" and "The Good News".
