Beck: 90s cult icon announces one off show with Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2018
Surfacing just as grunge and alternative rock turned mainstream, California loafer Beck quickly became symbolic of the slacker mindset. Declaring to listeners, "I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?" in his catatonically cool, genre-bending hit "Loser".
In short, Beck Hansen became an unequivocal cult icon and the face of '90s alternative culture.
Rolling Stone magazine once described his early sound as 'ultra surreal hip-hop folk that harkens back to Subterranean Homesick Blues' - and despite dipping in and out of many different genres, the sentiments in his music remain similarly louche some two decades later.
In his latest announcement, Beck has revealed that he will perform a one off concert with indie rockers the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Dublin on 23 May 2018; much to the delight of fans this side of the Atlantic.
With the Yeah Yeah Yeahs back on tour for the first time in four years following their 2013 album Mosquito, make sure you don't miss out on your chance to see two legendary acts live. Buy Beck tickets now at StubHub UK.
Beck: record sales of 16 million and counting
Growing up just off Hollywood Boulevard, Beck was surrounded by L.A's diverse musical culture. Absorbing everything from hip-hop to country blues, he was inspired to pick up the guitar and got his first taste of entertaining by covering Lead Belly covers in Lafayette Park. Feeling like a 'total outcast', he dropped out of high school and began a string a unglamorous menial jobs. Before hitting the big time, Beck worked as a leaf blower between performing in arthouse clubs and coffee houses.
After paying his dues in basement bars across Los Angeles, the self-confessed oddball burst onto the music scene in the early '90s with his lo-fi, distinctively scratchy style. His landmark 1994 album Mellow Gold made him one of the key voices of his generation. Blending country blues and rap for his 1996 album Odelay, Beck proved he wasn't just flash in the pan, and won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
Over the course of his career, the eclectic musician has never failed to surprise with his catalogue of masterpiece albums. Bass heavy hip hop beats and Prince-like funk in Midnite Vultures made him one of the biggest selling, and most respected, rock artists on the planet. In 2015, he released the single "Dreams" off of his critically acclaimed thirteenth album Colors. The track has appeared in everything from FIFA 16 to an Apple TV advert, proving there's still a place for this grungy icon in the digital era.
