Youngstown State Penguins Football TicketsThe Youngstown State football team, known as the Penguins, has a long and rich tradition that intersects with the history of small and mid-sized college football in America. The team was originally part of the smaller College Division and later Division II football between 1938 and 1977. After joining Division I-AA (now known as FCS) in 1978, the team became a frequent playoff contender. Youngstown State entered its most dominant phase under future Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, during which it won four national championships. In 1994, the team cemented an undefeated 14-0-1 record with a 28-14 win against Boise State in the title game. Independent for most of its history, Youngstown State joined the Missouri Valley Conference, then known as the Gateway Football Conference, in 1997. The team returned to the championship game once again in January 2017 under head coach Bo Pelini, but it lost to James Madison by a score of 28-14. These lots are only available for season-long parking pass holders and are guaranteed with a membership to the Penguin Club. All tailgating lots open six hours before the start of the game and close at kickoff. Electricity and water aren’t available in the tailgating lots. Tailgaters must also dispose of any trash, including charcoal, when they are done.

The two campuses are located fewer than 50 miles away from each other in east Ohio. The teams first met in 1940 and played almost every year between 1967 and 1995, even after Akron joined Division I-A football. The rivalry went on a long hiatus in 1995, but it resumes in 2020. The winner of the game receives the Steel Tire trophy, which is named after the cities’ two traditional products: rubber for Akron and steel for Youngstown.
