PDC World Darts Championship 2019: usual suspects likely to dominate again

London's Alexandra Palace will host the PDC World Championship for the 12th successive year as an extended field of 96 players compete for a share of the £2.5m prize fund and the record £500,000 first prize. The highest profile event in darts, the winner also receives the Sid Waddell Trophy, named in honour of the darts commentator Sid Waddell who died in 2012.

Distinguished former champions Adrian Lewis, Gary Anderson and Raymond van Barneveld will be among the favourites once again, while Rob Cross is looking to retain the title he won so spectacularly last year. There will be no Phil Taylor, however - who, after dominating the competition for almost two decades, bowed out in 2018. Along with Taylor, there have only been seven other champions in the competition's history, while the only players to win it more than once are John Part (2003 & 2008), Adrian Lewis (2011 & 2012), Gary Anderson (2015 & 2016) and Michael van Gerwen (2014 & 2017). The one-time winners are the inaugural champion Dennis Priestley, Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld (2007) and Rob Cross (2018). PDC World Darts: farewell to Phil Taylor

No one in the history of darts - and few players across any sport - can match the influence, dominance and success of Phil Taylor. "The Power", winner of 14 PDC world titles and a record 16 in total, retired at the conclusion of the 2018 event after over 20 years at the top of the sport.

Taylor competed in a record 29th World Championship finals in 2018, surpassing the record of 28 appearances he jointly held with John Lowe, but fell just short of another title; losing 7–2 in to Rob Cross.
