White Rock Theatre
Entertainment by the sea at White Rock Theatre
Head to the glorious southern coast of England and you’ll find the quaint town of Hastings, stage for the famous battle of 1066. A beloved seaside resort and fishing port, it’s seen a lot less drama since then – unless you head to the White Rock Theatre. A new addition to the history of Hastings
Originally the East Sussex hospital, the theatre was opened in April 1927 by King Edward VIII as the White Rock Pavilion. It was constructed for the town’s municipal orchestra, and after renovations in 1937 and once more in 1985, it eventually became the White Rock Theatre. The capacity of the venue used to be 1,066 (after the Battle of Hastings), yet due to flexibility issues it was expanded to 1,082 (1620 for seated/standing shows) across a split-level auditorium lined with classic red seats. White Rock boasts a sea-view café-bar where you can relax before the show, and a conference room hosting anything from rehearsals to parties and meetings. A hugely important structure on the Hastings coastline, locals fought for its survival in the early 2000s before it was taken over by a large American company under which it has continued to thrive ever since. Supporting the local performing arts scene
At the White Rock Theatre, you can find anything from the best in stand-up comedy to musicals, gigs and, of course, an annual pantomime. Previous acts have included illusionist Derren Brown, jazz sensation Jools Holland and internationally renowned comedian Russell Brand. It’s also the host of the annual Hastings Musical Festival. One of the only festivals to take part in a theatre, it was founded in the early 1900s by a local music teacher looking to encourage choral singing. Now there are four performance categories (singing, instrumental, dancing, and speech and drama) in which favoured artists are awarded substantial grants from numerous funds and trusts. The festival takes place in March with singer and actress Petula Clark as its president. A true gem of the theatre world, you can’t miss the great white façade standing proud on the British shore.
