Western Kentucky Hilltoppers TicketsWestern Kentucky is known nationally for its amorphous mascot Big Red, its unique nickname the Hilltoppers and its competitive streak on the football field. The program has a rich history in the lower levels of college football dating back to its founding in 1913. Head coach Jimmy Feix, who led the team between 1968 and 1983, amassed more wins than anyone else in school history with 106. His teams made the championship game in 1973 and 1975 but lost both times. Jack Harbaugh took over in 1989 and led the team until 2002. In his final year as head coach, Western Kentucky won its first Division I-AA national championship with a win over No. 1 McNeese State by a margin of 34-14, avenging a loss from earlier in the season. The team finished the year with a 12-3 record and numerous personal awards. The school made the transition to Division I-A bowl subdivision football in 2009, first joining the Sun Belt Conference and then Conference USA. Where does Western Kentucky play?Western Kentucky plays at the Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium, located on the school’s campus in Bowling Green. Opened in 1968, the stadium is named in honor of head coach L.T. Smith, who led the team in 1920 and 1921. The name was changed in 2007 after Houchens Industries made a $5 million donation to assist with renovations. The playing surface is named in honor of former head coach Jimmy Feix. When it’s full, the stadium has an official capacity of 22,000. In addition to standard seating and student seating, Western Kentucky also offers club seats, VIP chairs and other premium options for donors.

Who are Western Kentucky’s biggest rivals?Western Kentucky shares an intra-state rivalry with Middle Tennessee State. Known as the 100 Miles of Hate, the matchup has been played almost every year since 1928 with the exception of a long hiatus between 1992 and 2006. Over the history of the rivalry, both teams have been concurrent members of the Ohio Valley Conference, the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA. Western Kentucky also has a longstanding rivalry with Marshall University known as the Moonshine Throwdown. Both teams have played on a regular basis since the first matchup in 1941. The Hilltoppers used to compete with Eastern Kentucky in the Battle of the Bluegrass and Murray State in the Battle for the Red Belt, but these matchups have been infrequently played since WKU made the leap to FBS.
