Waste Management Phoenix Open TicketsThe Waste Management Phoenix Open, which has earned the nickname "The Greatest Show on Grass" for its relaxed, fan-friendly atmosphere, is one of the best-attended golf tournaments in the entire world with more than 700,000 fans every year. Since it began operations in 1932 (with a brief reprieve between 1936 and 1938), the tournament has gone by many names, including the Western Open, the Arizona Open, the Ben Hogan Invitational and the FBR Open. Though the Phoenix Country Club and Arizona Country Club served as tournament homes for many years, TPC Scottsdale has remained the centerpiece of the tournament since 1987. Past winners have included golf luminaries such as Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Jimmy Demaret, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh. The tournament also has a philanthropic aim, raising tens of millions of dollars for charity. On Tuesday, February 2nd, fans can attend a Special Olympics putting challenge and the R.S. Hoyt Jr. Family Foundation Dream Day Activities, including a trick shot show and a junior golf clinic. How is the field chosen for the Phoenix Open? The Phoenix Open features a 132-player field drawn largely from the PGA Tour order. Since this is an open event, four players can qualify for the tournament from earlier qualifying rounds before the main event. The tournament attracts many of the top players in the world. For example, the 2020 tournament featured 19 of the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings. Players have until the week before the tournament to announce whether they will participate. If they do not make the cut after the first two rounds, they will be eliminated from the tournament. Players can also withdraw from the tournament at any time.
Who was the winner of the previous Phoenix Open?Webb Simpson was the winner of the 2020 Phoenix Open with a score of 17 under par in extra holes. Simpson forced a playoff by making a birdie on the final hole to tie Tony Finau at 267 shots apiece. In the 18th hole playoff, Simpson secured the victory with a birdie putt immediately after Finau missed his own birdie. Justin Thomas, Nate Lashley and Bubba Watson all finished tied for third with scores of 14 under par. Other notable finishers included Jon Rahm at 11 under and Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama at 10 under par.
What is the course like?Designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, TPC Scottsdale runs for 7,266 yards through desert conditions. With three par-5 and four par-3 holes, the course features large greens and generous fairways. However, the water hazards on six holes and the 70 bunkers carefully placed around the fairways and greens can potentially trip up players. The longest holes on the course are the par-5 third and 13th holes, which both run for 558 yards. The fairways and greens are composed of TifDwarf grass.
