Representing the heart of America
The Capitals were formed in 1974 when they joined the NHL alongside fellow expansion team the Kansas City Scouts. Based in Washington, D.C., the team represents the central seat of governance of America and thus was named the Capitals. Fittingly, the team adopted a kit in red, white and blue and has had various arrangements of stars included on their logos. Often referred to as the Caps, the club has also partnered with the U.S. military and navy to honour the sacrifice of service men and women. This was highlighted in the 2018 NHL Stadium Series, a match played outdoors against the Toronto Maple Leafs, when the Capitals wore stylised Navy-inspired uniforms. With a passionate and loyal supporter base, the team draws significant crowds to their home stadium, Capital One Arena. The impressive 18,500 capacity arena in the Chinatown district of Washington, D.C. is also home to the NBA's Washington Wizards. At last, Stanley Cup success
Starved of success in the early years of the franchise, the Capitals qualified for their first Stanley Cup finals playoffs in 1998. However, the team failed to clinch their first championship and were defeated comprehensively by the Detroit Red Wings. Returning stronger than ever in 2018, the Capitals faced off against the Vegas Golden Knights who had defied popular belief to reach the finals in their inaugural season. The Knights claimed victory in Game 1, an enthralling offense-dominant exhibition that finished with a 6-4 score line. Spurred on by the pain of defeat 20 years before, the Capitals stormed back to win the following four matches and lift the franchise's first Stanley Cup. Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin was rewarded with the Conn Smythe Trophy, recognising him as the most valuable player of the series. The Stanley Cup victory was feverishly celebrated by Washington, D.C. locals, with thousands of fans filling the streets in a victory parade.
