Europe's Finest Underdogs
Within the autonomous community of Valencia, in the province of Castellón, lies the city of Villareal. With only just over 50,000 inhabitants, it is a relatively small place, especially considering the domestic and international success of its football team. Villareal was founded during the Reconquista by King James I of Aragon in 1274. After the longest reigning Iberian monarch regained Muslim territory, he presented the city with royal status. It later became well known for its orange cultivation and in modern times, its football team. Villareal CF came into being as a way to promote sport, particularly football, in the region. The team began playing across Valencia, gradually making it into the Tercera Divisíon, Spain's third tier national league. They would have to wait until 1998 to play their first match in the top levels of La Liga, where they faced the then reigning European champions, Real Madrid, in their first game. It was a huge step for this tiny club, which went on to snap at the heels of Spain's top teams for the coming years, an ever-present force waiting to strike! A Title Shot Just Beyond Reach!
In the 2004-05 season, Villareal CF finished third in La Liga, directly qualifying for the European football league for the first time. The club went undefeated on the way to the last 16 stages, fending off Manchester Utd with a draw and a win against Portugal's Benfica. After scraping through against Rangers and Inter Milan, Villareal CF found themselves in a European semi-final against Arsenal, which they sadly lost and had to bow out of the competition. An all-time high finish of second in La Liga, 8 points behind Real Madrid, led to another European campaign in 2008-09 season. Yet again, they fell to the mercy of Arsenal, with legends of the English club Robin Van Persie, Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor each putting one past the yellow submarine to knock them out once more. There's no doubt about it, Villareal CF will always be a threat, knocking at the door ready to snatch that title from the hands of these footballing giants. You could be there to see it all happen live, with Villareal CF tickets now available to buy and sell via StubHub!
