A London venue you can't miss
The Village Underground became Shoreditch's hottest new venue when it opened its doors in 2007. Converted from a rundown Victorian warehouse, its main space not only stages club nights and concerts, it also hosts theatre, live art and exhibitions. The four graffiti-strewn tube carriages and shipping containers which sit on the nearby viaduct are also an eye-catching part of the same venue, offering affordable studio space for local creatives including writers, filmmakers, artists, musicians and designers and creating a general community spirit. Poet Joe Dunthorne, theatre company Punchdrunk and LGBTQ club night Sink the Pink are just a few of the notable names who have been Village Underground tenants over the years. The venue also boasts a meeting room and the city's largest wall dedicated entirely to street art, while in 2017 its concept was transported to Portugal with a second site based within the transport museum of capital city Lisbon. From techno club nights to chart-topping pop stars
From its glass-panelled ten-metre high ceilings to its 19th Century brickwork, the Village Underground's main warehouse is a stunning and versatile space which boasts a standing capacity of 700 and seating capacity of 250. It's hosted everything from fashion shows and lavish dinners to major product launches and business conferences during its relatively brief history. But it's best-known for its array of live art. Neneh Cherry, Dirty Projectors, Charli XCX, A$AP Rocky, Matthew and the Atlas, Jon Hopkins, Wye Oak, Lissie and Charlotte Gainsbourg are just a handful of the notable musicians who have taken to its stage, while popular club nights include Utopia, Channel One Sound System and the legendary Friday techno series Superstition. Electronica, indie, hip-hop and experimental music all have their dedicated events too, ensuring that there's something for everyone at this highly atmospheric and unique venue.
