From one league to another
The Canucks joined the NHL in 1970 along with the Buffalo Sabres as the league was expanded from 12 to 14 teams. The club was however founded 25 years before joining the NHL, having competed in both the Pacific Coast Hockey League (from 1945-1952) and Western Hockey League (from 1952-1970). The Canucks reached their first ever Stanley Cup finals playoffs in 1982 after defeating the Chicago Blackhawks to become Western Conference Champions. They were no match for the rampant New York Islanders in the finals however, falling one step short of claiming the franchise's inaugural Stanley Cup. The 1982 season was also the first season that Stan Smyl, a tough winger who was renowned for his goal scoring and body checking, served as captain. Smyl would go on to lead the team for another seven seasons, becoming one of the most famous players to represent the Canucks and was adored by fans. Following his retirement, he continued his association with the club and became an assistant coach before serving the front office as an advisor. The story of Johnny Canuck
Johnny Canuck is a fictional Canadian political cartoon character who was first created in 1869. The character was a personification of Canada and represented an honourable working-class man. He was often depicted as a lumberjack, farmer or soldier and was chosen as the figure to represent the Vancouver team. Locals of Vancouver and neighbouring cities proudly associate with the Canucks because of this, helping to develop a strong fan following and attendance at games. The team plays their home matches at Rogers Arena, an almost 19,000-capacity stadium in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Fin the Whale, a large orca mascot for the team, can be seen at games energising the crowd and shooting t-shirts out of an air cannon.
