A brief history of Union Chapel London
Union Chapel London was founded as a collaboration between nonconformist Protestants and breakaway Anglicans in the Highbury Grove section of London in 1877. From the outset, this new congregation intended for their church to stand apart from the rest of its brethren, establishing it as a "Friend to All"- a mantra that has endured ever since. The present version of the chapel, designed by James Cubitt in the Victorian Gothic style and completed in 1877 has undergone several significant renovations including 1890 and 2002. After surviving a demolition attempt in 1982, church patrons hit upon a plan to make it more accessible to the greater community and in the 1990s it first opened its doors as a music venue. Since then audiences have been treated to many highly regarded talents such as Yossou N'Dour, Beck and Elton John. However, the 1999 < a href="/bjork-tickets/performer/2502/">Bjork show still ranks as one of its most legendary performances.
